Cookie’s Classes

Cookie Rudman
Cecelia Fisher “Cookie” Rudman was a dear friend and ardent supporter of The Helen Hayes Awards. She was a vibrant woman who keenly understood how theatre enriches the life of a community and the essential part it plays in the academic and social challenges of children. In her memory we established “Cookie’s Classes,” an initiative to “adopt” Washington Theatre Legacy Project Classes in DC Public Schools, and Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the area.

“Adopting” A Cookies Class
The Washington Theatre Legacy project covers the total costs of educators (teaching theatre artists), theatre tickets to professional productions, transportation, resources materials, and classroom teacher workshops. All tickets are purchased from Washington area theatres. It costs approximately $1,000 to bring the program to each class of 20–30 children. A 100% tax deductible contribution will “adopt” one class. You can also sponsor more than one class or half of a class.

Why Adopt A Cookie’s Class?
The practical applications of live theatre enable a child to see the challenges of their own life through a fairly different lens. Communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, collaboration, discernment, engagement, powers of observation, confidence, movement, trust and focus - are enriched. Aptitude in language arts, history, science and mathematics - is enhanced. Appreciation of the unique role the arts play in understanding all human conditions - expands. Recent studies have shown that students who participate in the arts, especially theatre, do better academically, and are more successful in their career endeavors, than those who do not.
